Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition caused by a change in the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina. It can cause unusual discharge, often with a strong fishy smell, although some people have no symptoms.

Understanding Bacterial Vaginosis
BV is not classed as a sexually transmitted infection, although it can be associated with sexual activity and may increase the risk of acquiring an STI. It is caused by an imbalance in the usual bacteria found in the vagina.
Common symptoms include a thin, watery discharge that may appear white or grey and have a strong fishy smell, particularly after sex. BV does not usually cause soreness or itching, and around half of people with BV may have no symptoms.
Treatment & Advice
Bacterial vaginosis can often be treated with a short course of antibiotics, either as tablets or as a vaginal gel or cream, depending on the individual circumstances.
Our pharmacy team can provide confidential advice and appropriate treatment where suitable. If your symptoms are unusual, persistent or recurrent, or there is a possibility of an STI, you may need further assessment through your GP or a sexual health service.
